
Mattel and Warner Bros. Pictures have tapped Jon M. Chu (Wicked, In the Heights, Crazy Rich Asians) to direct the live-action Hot Wheels feature film based on the brand. Writing partners Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier will pen the script (Creed II, They Cloned Tyrone) with producers J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and Chu’s Electric Somewhere. No release date was announced.
This is the latest picture announced as Mattel Studios continues to leverage it’s IP into the cinematic universe. The company says it recently wrapped principal photography on two live-action films: Masters of the Universe, slated for worldwide theatrical release on June 5, 2026, and Matchbox, set to debut in Fall 2026.

In addition, Mattel Studios has announced 15 films in development including another American Girl movie, as well as pics based on Barney, Bob the Builder, Hot Wheels, Magic 8 Ball, Monster High, Polly Pocket, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Thomas & Friends, UNO, View-Master, Whac-A-Mole, and Wishbone, as well as a film based on 70s hit toy Major Matt Mason. In addition, Mattel Studios has announces Christmas Balloon, a holiday family drama based on all-new IP.
