With the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, will we see older gamers flocking to play Mario Kart World? A recent BBC report seems to think so.

Recently, TalkTalk found that racing games are one of the most popular genres for those over 55 to play. With the addition of Mario’s popularity, we could see the game becoming a hit with all age groups.

Building on Statista’s report showing a 64% increase in the 55-64 age group from 2015 to 2025, TalkTalk’s survey dives deep into the gaming habits and preferences of older adults. The findings suggest that Nintendo has a prime opportunity to tailor its offerings to this expanding audience. 

Key Survey Highlights: 

  • Significant Growth: Nearly half (41%) of the 1000 older gamers surveyed now regularly game on phones, tablets, or consoles, demonstrating a clear appetite for accessible gaming experiences. 
  • Racing Game Appeal: 22% of older gamers enjoy racing games, indicating a strong potential market for Mario Kart World and other similar titles on the Nintendo Switch 2. Puzzle games were the no.1 choice, at 70%.  
  • Long-Term Loyalty: Over a third (37%) have been gaming for 6-10 years, and 28% have been enjoying it for over a decade. These are experienced gamers who are likely to invest in new consoles and games. 
  • Social Connection: 31% of older gamers engage in social gaming, suggesting that features like online multiplayer in Mario Kart World could be a major draw. The game also caters to younger audiences, meaning play could expand and be intergenerational, so you could play with your grandkids!
  • Cognitive Benefits: 59% of older gamers cite keeping their minds sharp as their top reason to play, suggesting that Nintendo could emphasize the cognitive benefits of gaming in its marketing. 
  • Time Investment: Gamers aged 55 and up are plugging into the world of gaming for over eight hours a week, demonstrating a significant commitment to the hobby.
