Wendy Wen_high resI wanted to learn more about the Guangzhou International Toy & Hobby Fair which will be taking place 8-10 April 2018. Guangzhou is the largest toy production center in China so it merits our close attention. Particularly since it has expanded to include the  International Stroller and Baby Product Fair.

Wendy Wen, General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd. which runs the fairs, was kind enough to answer my questions.

Richard:

The Guangzhou International Toy & Hobby Fair will be taking place in Guangzhou, China. Can you tell us a bit about Guangzhou, for what it is famous, and what they can expect to see while there?

Wendy:
Known also as Canton, Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong province and is the third largest city in China with a more than 2,200 year history. The city is located at the north of the Pearl River delta and has the longest history of the world's international trade port cities.

Guangzhou is a historical and cultural city. There are many attractions that cannot be missed, like the Canton Tower, Shamian Island, The Pearl River Cruise and Shangxia Jiu Lu Pedestrian Street

Guangzhou is South China's largest financial, high-tech, light industrial, communications and transportation center. It is well connected with other busiest cities like Shenzhen, Hong Kong or Macau by trains or by car.

More importantly, Guangzhou is China's leading toy production and export center. It is estimated that about 80% of all the toys produced worldwide are made in China. The bulk of toy exports are produced to OEM orders for foreign brands.

Its manufacturing activities are centered around Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Shantou’s Chenghai, and Foshan. As such, you can take advantage of Guangzhou's location by  visiting the factory of your potential partner and manufacturer in one trip.

Richard:
What is the importance of Guangzhou to the toy industry and why is a show taking place there?

Wendy:
Guangzhou is the major city of Guangdong Province, which is the country’s toy manufacturing base and one of the busiest toy export ports in China. In fact, the province accounts for over half of the world’s toys production.

Guangzhou also possesses high purchasing power with GDP per capita & annual retail sales of USD 19,000 and USD 116.6 billion in 2015, respectively, meaning there is a strong consumer base for toy & baby products just in the city alone. Hence, overseas exhibitors can expect to see growing demand for their products while visitors can expect to see a wide range of toy and baby product manufacturers at the fair.

Richard:
What are the benefits of attending or exhibiting at the Fair?

Wendy:
For visitors, it is beneficial to attend our fair because it has a strong focus on sourcing due to the number of manufacturers that exhibit. Here they can connect directly with the manufacturers instead of intermediate agencies.

Not only are the choices more diversified and cover all price ranges, these manufacturers provide greater order flexibility. For instance, they may make small orders for a trial first. Being located in China’s toy production hub, it is also easier to visit potential factories soon after the fair.

International visitors can also enjoy value-added services like free accommodations (register before the deadline, first come first served), a business matching service with support by professional interpreters with business knowledge, other convenient service including entry badge delivery to your door, business support onsite.

For exhibitors, the Toy & Hobby fair is the ideal place to enter the China market. China has a strong potential for overseas brands as consumers look for the safest products for their children.  Given the higher quality and safety standards, overseas brands are likely to be sought after by consumers. What’s more, thanks to the two-child policy in 2016, an extra three million births are expected every year. This increase in new-borns implies the growing demand for toys in China.

International exhibitors also enjoy a prime location, upgraded booth package (design and quality wise), year-round promotion including social media exposure, pre-show business matching

Richard:
Toy industry executives attend fairs in Hong Kong, Germany, New York and other locations. Why should they add Guanzhou to their list?

Wendy:
First of all, Guangzhou enjoys a geographical advantage with a lot of manufacturers in the vicinity. Visiting the fair means you are going straight to the source, ensuring direct contact with manufacturers and being able to secure better deals. With such a strong domestic presence at the fair, it is also the ideal location to understand trends in the Chinese market.

April is the sourcing season in China after Chinese New Year (normally ended in late Feb).

As an exhibitor, it is easier for overseas brands to standout given the relatively smaller number of international participants.  The new International Zone has fast become one of the most popular areas of the fair however, as many local buyers in the region will not attend overseas fairs. Apart from this, the timing of the Guangzhou show also sets us apart from other shows. Spring is the peak buying season for the Chinese consumer market and with June 1st being China’s Children’s Day, this is a very important time for stroller and baby product sales in particular.

Richard:
For those who have never attended the Guangzhou International Toy & Hobby Fair, can you tell them if there are hotels close to the exhibition and what is the easiest way for them to book a room?

Wendy:
The Westin Pazhou is a five-minute walk from the venue
. It is also the fair’s official hotel, and we offer a free 3-night stay to eligible overseas buyers if they register before 23 February. As the fair is held in Guangzhou’s trade fair hub, there are a number of other hotels near the venue in different price ranges. Some of them will offer shuttle bus service during the fair period. Messe Frankfurt can help get a discounted hotel rate. Please visit our website or contact us for details.

Richard:
What are you providing for international guests in the way of translators and other assistance in being able to easily navigate the show and engage in discussions?

Wendy:
We provide overseas buyers with a free English and Chinese interpreter service. Apart from this, there is also free business matching for overseas buyers. A list of exhibitors is selected according to buyers’ sourcing preference. After that we will arrange one to one meetings between matched exhibitors and buyers. An interpreter will be provided to assist the meeting.

Richard:
How does someone go about registering for the show either as an exhibitor or attendee?

Wendy:
Interested suppliers can fill in the exhbitor application form prior to 31 Jan by clicking here.

Visitors can pre-register for the show by clicking here.

IMPORTANT:Visitors who pre-register on or before 23 Feb may receive free hotel accommodations.
