What I like about all of this is that it allows people who look down on cartoon culture to reconsider their prejudices.
Yes, as amazing as it sounds, SpongeBob SquarePants the Broadway Musical is coming. The show, featuring original music by the likes of Joe Perry and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, the Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants and The Flaming Lips, will open with previews beginning on November 6 and a big opening night on December 4 at the Palace Theater.
I think its fascinating that cartoon culture has invaded high culture. Disney has successfully brought several of its cartoons to Broadway and "South Park" creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have a huge hit with The Book of Mormon. Now we have Nickelodeon hoping for a Tony Award.
What I like about all of this is that it allows people who look down on cartoon culture to reconsider their prejudices; opens up more ways to be creative with the characters; ; expands and extends the life span of a property and makes for great theatre. Let's not forget that "Lion King", "Beauty and the Beast" and other great cartoons have powerful storylines.
So, what's next? Perhaps Elmo or Cookie Monster doing a One Man Show or perhaps… a "PJ Masks" drama.
