7 Dwarves By Another Name

Breaktime-header 7dwarfsI was trying to remember all the Seven Dwarfs the other day. I could only come up with six so I decided to look up their names. Much to my surprise, there were a host of alternative names, some unused by Disney and some by other productions. In the original Brothers Grimm version, the Dwarves were unnamed. This allowed later versions to provide them with a set of names. The Walt Disney Company was just one of them.

Though the Disney movie came out in 1937, a play was produced on Broadway in 1912. The playwright, Winthrop Ames, gave them these names: Blick, Flick, Glick, Snick, Whick, Plick and Quee. They are totally unmemorable as they don't do anything to give you a sense of each Dwarve's character.

That was what Walt Disney wanted to do, and did so successfully by naming them: Happy, Sleepy, Dopey, Doc, Grumpy, Sneezey and Bashful.

I did come across an interesting website, "Unused Dwarfs", that provided the names that were not chosen by Disney Studios in 1934. There are a lot of them so I will just provide you with some that I liked:

  • Blabby
  • Flabby
  • Crabby
  • Dirty
  • Deafy
  • Awful
  • Strutty
  • Jazzy
  • Shifty
  • Slutty

  1. Most of these don’t sound like dwarfs the kids would like. Also not surprised the last didn’t make the cut! Probably was one of the writers joking around
