When you are in New York for Toy Fair, buy yourself (or me for that matter) a drink at the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel. And while you sit their, resting your feet and your nerves, gaze up at the wonderful Maxfield Parrish mural that runs the 30 foot length of the bar. It was painted in 1906 by Parrish for what was then the Knickerbocker Hotel. It has resided at the St. Regis Hotel since 1932. Parrish was paid $5,000 for his work ($120,000 in today's money).
Parrish was a prolific illustrator of the first half of the 20th century and he left us a great number of illustrations for children's books. I have included some of my favorites for you to enjoy.
Take your time looking at it and you will see that the characters have highly expressive faces and postures. You will also find his use of color to be startling in its ability to stimulate, fascinate and charm.
