When it comes to Halloween, many parents have a love/hate relationship with the holiday. On the one hand, there are few things more adorable than a young child dressed as a chef/bumble bee/slice of bacon/princess/superhero, or any of the thousands of costumes or homemade designs. But the act of visiting houses and asking for handfuls of candy can present other challenges. The sugary treats often replace the parent-approved healthy snacks for days or weeks at a time and those with food allergies are all but shut out of the kid-centric festivities.
Parents are constantly looking for healthy food options for their children. In fact, healthy eating options for kids is a huge mega trend. And everyone is getting into the game with things like organic, gluten free and kid friendly snacks, single serving packaging and curated food subscription services that even let parents customize healthy snacks for their kids.
So is there anything parents can do during Halloween to curb the sugar urge?
Enter The Switch Witch and what they love – TOYS! Developed by a celiac mom for a son with food allergies, The Switch Witch works similar to an Elf on the Shelf. Partnered with the Teal Pumpkin Project, which flags homes that offer trick-or-treaters something other than candy for their treats, it all starts with a book and a friendly-looking Switch Witch toy. Unlike Elf on the Shelf, there are no rules and kids are encouraged to touch and play with their Switch Witch. On Halloween night, the little ones leave out candy they choose to trade along with a note for their Switch Witch. The Witch replaces the candy with a book or toy. How much candy is "switchcrafted" is determined by the kids and parents.
And if parents don’t want all that candy in the house, The Switch Witch has a solution. The company is an official sponsor of Operation Shoebox, a nonprofit that donates candy oversees to our troops. The Switch Witch is currently available at switchwitches.com, select Whole Foods, Target.com, Amazon.com and local retailers across the country.
