For the first time in 100 years, non-Hispanic
Caucasian Americans experienced more deaths than births. The New York Times reporter Sam Roberts in
his article “Census Benchmark for White Americans: More Deaths Than Births,”
notes that Over all, the number of non-Hispanic white Americans is expected to
begin declining by the end of this decade.
According to the article, demographers were surprised by the shift as it
was not anticipated for another 10 years.
What I found to be extremely interesting in
its implication for America’s workforce and power structure was this quote by
William H. Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution: “It makes more
vivid than ever the fact that we will be reliant on younger minorities and
immigrants for our future demographic and economic growth.”
The play industries and particularly
traditional toys will need to revise packaging and play patterns with an eye
towards a rising demographic that is going to grow in numbers and economic
clout. It’s beginning to happen
now. Are we seeing toy companies adapt? I don't think so.
