High tech (High Toy?) predictions for the next 10 years

As we come to the end of the year, it’s interesting to see what “experts” are predicting about the future.  After all, we in the toy industry are on the delivery end of Moore’s Echo which says that what is cutting edge technology is a toy in 7 years, 5 years and less.  So, smart people in the toy industry need to keep their eye on what is coming down the road.

With that in mind, below are some predictions I found in the December 13, 2011 New York Times.  I chose the ones that are predicted to occur within the next 10 years.

Before we look at them we need to remember that predictions can be amazingly right on and amazingly off target.  Take for example the above picture of fast food in the year 2000 as predicted in the year 1910.

So, with that in mind, let’s look at the predictions:

COMPUTER ON A CHIP In 2020 there will be a computer that holds its processor and memory on a single chip.  Think of the computing power to size ratio that will offer.  Your cell phone will be able to do what your computer does now.  Imagine the toys.

HALO OF DATA You will have a halo of data that moves with you and will, via your smartphone, will provide you with information on the people and things around you.  Actually it seems kind of creepy from a privacy standpoint.  On the other hand, think of the toys.

PRACTICAL ROBOT CARS By 2018 there will be cars that you do not have to drive.  Some people will miss the thrill of controlling acceleration  and direction but others will love being able to do other tasks and just sit back.  I have to say, however, that I am not sure a ride-on car that you don’t have to drive yourself will be much fun for kids.

Do you have some technology or toy predictions?  If so, let usknow.
