What’s Next: The Straddling Bus

I know, I know it’s not a toy but it’s really better than a toy.   It’s the coolest thing I have ever seen in mass transit.  It’s a bus that is so big (it holds 1200 to 1400 passengers) and so clever (It straddles two lanes of traffic) that I just had to share it with you.

6a0133ec87bd6d970b0133f3336e55970b-320wi It’s designed to, by actually straddling the traffic; avoid adding more congestion to highways.   The first one is planned for Beijing.  Here is how the website  China Hush describes it:

It is 4-4.5 m high with two levels: passenger’s board on the upper level while other vehicles lower than 2 m can go through under. Powered by electricity and solar energy, the bus can speed up to 60 km/h carrying 1200-1400 passengers at a time without blocking other vehicles’ way. Also it costs about 500 million yuan to build the bus and a 40-km-long path for it, only 10% of building equivalent subway. It is said that the bus can reduce traffic jams by 20-30%.

Watch the video for a fairly surreal experience.  You have to get about a minute in before you see how it works.  Click on this link:
